New Website. Outreach Prep. New Endowment Program.

CBDP Newsletter May 2018

Dear Friends,

Our third annual outreach program is just six weeks away, so we are hard at work prepping and planning. As always, we want the program to be as impactful as possible and we want the kids to have a great time and learn cool new things to help in their journey through school and life.

To kick off our outreach prep, we recently relaunched our website. Please check it out and send us your feedback. Also, follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to keep up with our progress.

For this year’s outreach, we are doubling the size of our Coding Camp. Over the past year, 68 students have successfully completed our coding program; going from being complete coding novices to building simple websites and achieving basic proficiency in Javascript. This year we will be introducing the students to the Raspberry Pi suite. Using this tool, they will learn basic hardware/software integration concepts and some robotics concepts. We will have them build a farm bot and a simple electronic medical system, as part of an integrative course exploring ways to solve the problems of hunger, food production and lack of basic healthcare services in rural Nigeria. The Raspberry Pi is pivotal to our expanded curriculum and we expect it will be for years to come.

Thanks to the generosity of a donor, we have been able to acquire 22 Raspberry Pi units for use in our camp in September. We would like to have at least 50 units. Each one costs about $50. Please consider donating to support this program.

Additionally, we are piloting a new Adopt-a-School initiative to provide an opportunity for donors to partner with high schools in rural Nigeria to fund their graduating students’ university education. Donors would designate their gifts for the rural school/community they choose to adopt and CBDP would take care of the logistics. Donors may also make a general donation towards this initiative if they’d prefer. We have already secured a commitment to one rural high school and are working on commitments to eight more schools. The cost of sponsoring a college student ranges from $300 to $450 a year, depending on the college.

Thank you for your support.
